Sweet Success: Sherlock and Watson!

“My boyfriend and I have adopted two cats from Butte Humane Society, and our little family is a definite success to us!

When we adopted our first cat Sherlock, a one-year-old male tabby (he was already named Sherlock and we loved it), he had just been returned to BHS because he wasn’t cuddly. We adopted him knowing that he wasn’t lap cat material, and we have respected that. But since coming to live with us, he has been sleeping at our feet at night, rubbing his face on us, and walking us to his food bowl each morning. He is a tough guy, but he’s a marshmallow in secret, and he loves showing off to company and playing in the bath!

A year after adopting Sherlock, we got him a friend, Watson, who was part of a litter of black kittens at BHS. Watson is the opposite of Sherlock in that he loves to snuggle and be carried around and vocalize his feelings. We also share a mutual love of bacon!

In the two years they’ve been together, Sherlock and Watson have basically turned out just like their literary counterparts, and we all couldn’t be happier. BHS really facilitated our little fur family, and for that we are grateful!”

We are so glad that Sherlock and Watson found their homes, and thankful for the love their new owners have shown!

Sweet Success: Timon!

“When my boyfriend and I first saw Timon in the shelter we fell in love with his energetic personality and his love to play. We could tell he loves being in a house where he can run freely and let out all of his energy. He has six human brothers and caring parents who play with him a lot and give him love. He likes to stare out windows, talk to the neighborhood cats, do parkour off of the couches and play on the bed sheets when we make the bed. We are so lucky to have him in our lives!”

We are so happy that Timone found his forever home and is so loved by his new owners!

Keeping Pets Happy While You’re Away

When pet owners are away, there are some things to keep in mind to make sure pets stay as happy as possible. Take a look at these five tips and ideas to make sure your pet stays safe and entertained while you’re gone!

  • Try to take your dog on a walk before you leave, especially if you’ll be gone for a long amount of time. This way your pet gets their energy out while you’re with them and they can nap while you’re gone!
  • Make sure your dog wears tags even while they’re at home. This could save a lot of stress and trouble if they ever got out or decided to run away while you’re gone.
  • Check to make sure your pet has water and has been fed before you leave. Leave an extra treat or toy for them to distract themselves from your absence.
  • Consider leaving the radio on. Sometimes light noise can help a dog or cat to relax and it can also drown out any annoying sounds from outside that might bother them.
  • To give cats a space that’s all their own, try buying a cat tree to put in one spot of the room, and put toys in that area as well. This can be the cat’s spot to hang out, relax and play while you’re gone!

“We brought TJ home two years ago. He was a shy two-year-old who had been in the cattery for about five months. Our purpose in adopting him was rather selfish at first. We were going through some rough work-related stress, and I thought we needed some “pet therapy.” We did changed his life, but he sure changed ours as well. I hadn’t lived with a pet since I was a child, and my family had never owned a pet. We worked hard to learn what he needed to make him feel safe with us. We fussed over him when he got sick, took him on trips with us, and bought him toys to play with- we learned that he prefers a string tied to a rubber band. He sleeps on our feet, waits for us by the door when we go out, chats with us about our day, reminds us to give him his treats, and purrs at the sound of our voices. He is the joy of our lives.”

We are so happy that TJ has found his forever home!

Foster Families

Butte Humane Society is dedicated to giving each animal another chance at a happy, healthy life. In many cases, fostering an animal outside of a kennel atmosphere is necessary for their optimum health and care. Many animals need foster families, including mother and nursing puppies and kittens, puppies or kittens under six or eight weeks old, those recovering from an illness, those who are overly stressed or depressed, and fospice.

Just this month, Kim H. took on nervous and timid Anala as well as a litter of sick kittens at the same time! BHS needed
someone to foster and medicate three sick kittens and Kim took them on without hesitation. She worked hard to get Anala over her fears of being alone and worked on her potty training. We are so thankful for the time and effort put into Anala, and she was adopted this month! Kim had a full house between her family and her fosters. The month before she took on a very fearful kitten named Bernard to socialize, and that kitten made leaps and bound thanks to her. On top of the time she put into Anala and Bernard, she paid both their adoption fees to help ensure they would find good homes! We are so appreciative she has been so willing to help us out! Thanks to her for all her hard work!

unnamedBeing a foster family for a dog or cat in need is very rewarding and will give them the love and socialization that they need. Individual attention can be hard to come by in a kennel environment, and we know our animals would be much happier in a home environment.
