Sweet Success Story: Puddling

We adopted Pudding August 27th. Steve renamed her that day: Princess. We’ve called her Princess ever since and she knows her name. She’s a GREAT PUPPY and will be a WONDERFUL DOG! Kathy Cangello is Princess’s trainer and dog sitter. We have a 1&1/2 year old male cat named Tuffy. Princess is 5 months old. In an effort to help them become “family” with us & each other, we recently took them both to the coast for a vacation for a few days. 

After three days of sharing a room in a motel, and going on adventures every day, we came home ONE TRIBE. It worked! I recommend that approach to help critters get along better.

We really love our Princess. My best friend, Dee Dee, is her godmother. And our wonderful neighbor, Joe, is her godfather. They regularly give her love & affection and she gives them plenty back. And I can’t say enough about Kathy & Gary Cangello, of Small Dog Rescue. 

Since Day #1, they have given us expert advice and helped set us up for success with our sweet puppy.

Dogs: Canine Equipment

As owner awareness and modern dog training has developed many dogs and their owners benefit from other types of equipment coupled with training. Hopefully this article will shed some light on equipment options for your dog’s training, walking and hiking needs. The goal is always to have you and your pup have an enjoyable experience!

With any equipment proper steps should be taken to introduce the equipment in a low pressure environment coupled with some tasty treats. Acclimating your pet to happily put the equipment on and off with ample rewards will develop a positive attitude and association with the equipment. Always make sure you’ve purchased the correct size and adjust the fit appropriately to your dog.

Teaching and training your dog to walk loose is vital to making the equipment work the way it should. No piece of equipment is a magic tool to eliminate pulling. Please watch for an upcoming article on loose leash walking. Never leave equipment on when your pet will be unsupervised. Leaving equipment can pose a health and safety risk by getting entangled in objects.

Types of Equipment

My personal favorite is the 2 Hounds Freedom Harness. This harness is an amazing tool to help train your dogs to walk well on leash. The design of this harness has 2 leash attachments, one in the front and one on the back. My favorite feature of this harness is when you’ve trained your dog to walk loose on leash, you can alternate between a front or back clip harness.

 

 

Easy Walk Harness

The Easy Walk harness is a great option for dogs who are big pullers, it’s  designed to be a front clip harness and works well to guide your dog in the direction you’re walking. It comes in a variety of colors and sizes and is extremely affordable.

 

 

Martingale Collar

For owners who decide to avoid harnesses and want a balanced approach, Martingale Collars serve as a training collar and slightly tighten when too much pressure from pulling takes place. The best feature on a martingale collar is when fitted appropriately they are a ‘no-slip’ collar.

Volunteer Spotlight: Jolie

Jolie began volunteering with Butte Humane Society in August of this year. In that time she jumped right in and has been incredibly helpful to staff and great with our animals. She volunteers with our cats and in our warehouse.

Jolie’s favorite area to volunteer is with our cats.she loves to sit quietly and patiently in the cattery and see who comes to her. She especially loves connecting with the shy cats, and gets a lot of joy when they allow her to interact with them. This is a talent not all possess, and it allows our cats to acclimate and begin trusting again. A lot of joy comes to seeing the cats that were very timid go to loving homes, and knowing she played a part in that.

Jolie’s most impactful moment comes from witnessing BHS’s staff. She said, “The biggest impact on me is seeing how thoroughly the staff vet the adoptees and care about the placement of each animal looking for a home.”

Jolie is fantastic with helping in our warehouse. Her favorite part about volunteering with BHS is knowing that she is helping the staff. In her own words:  “I can see their relief when I help in the warehouse.” The warehouse can be a messy area to volunteer, and she jumps in without complaint and keeps a fantastic attitude.

Jolie has her own pets at home she loves hanging out with. She has a 10 year old mixed breed dog and an 11 year old BHS alumni cat. Having started as an adopter, it is great to see her come full circle, and join as a part of our team. Volunteers like Jolie keep BHS running. Staff all love her, and are all so grateful she is with us.

Clinic Corner: Responsible Dog Ownership Month

September is Responsible Dog Ownership Month! Considering adopting a dog or already have one? Dogs don’t need perfect pet-parents, but they do need owners who take the steps necessary to ensure they live happy and healthy lives. Check out our tips for being a responsible dog owner below!

  1. Adopt a dog that suits your home and lifestyle:
    • Research breeds prior to selection (this can take time, and that’s ok!) and select a dog that you can provide adequate exercise, shelter, food, and medical care to.

2. Plan to invest in your dog’s medical care:

    • Make sure your pet receives preventive health care (annual exams, vaccinations, dental care, parasite control, etc.), from puppy-hood up through their senior years. Many vaccines and preventatives require annual boosters after their puppy series. Talk with your vet at your annual visit about any changes to your dog’s environment or activities so they can make sure they have everything they need to stay happy and healthy.
    • Budget for emergencies or unexpected illnesses as much as possible.

3. Be responsible for your pet in your community:

    • Carry waste bags when you are out and about and clean up after your pet. It helps prevent the spread of disease.
    • Obey all local ordinances, including licensing, leash requirements and noise control.
    • Don’t allow your dog to roam. Keep them secured on your property, in your home or yard.
    • Spay or neuter your dog as soon as they are old enough to prevent overpopulation.

4. Keep them safe:

    • Make sure your dog is microchipped and has a collar with a tag. Always make sure your contact information is up to date in the microchip registry as well as on their collar.
    • Keep an evacuation bag ready for them with food, medication, vaccine records and anything else they may need should you need to evacuate your home.

Volunteer Spotlight: Adam C.

Adam C. began volunteering with BHS in 2020 during the pandemic, and in that time he has become a weekly regular at Dog Adoptions. He has recently begun training new volunteers at dogs as a Mentor Volunteer. Adam is always welcoming, and a pleasure to work with.

Adam most enjoys working with the shy or fearful dogs. He finds there is something heartwarming about seeing them gradually warm up and trust new people. He knows what a rewarding experience helping these dogs learn to trust again is and to give them the love they need and deserve.

At home Adam has a sweet Red Heeler 12 year old named Dashia that he got when he was 11. The two have been able to grow up together. She likes to sass them for attention or treats. Her favorite thing in the world is bubbles.

Outside of socializing dogs, he has a number of hobbies he enjoys participating in. Recently he has been doing a lot of photography and hiking. He is a violinist and enjoys playing his violin on occasion. He also has a great time fishing, gaming and reading fantasy or sci-fi books.

Staff loves Adam’s dedication to our dogs and is thrilled to watch how he has progressed within our organization in such a short period of time. His love and compassion for the dogs shows both in the dogs progression and in his demeanor. We are honored to have Adam as a volunteer with us.
