105th Anniversary Gala – Thank You!

Thank you so much for your attendance, participation, and help at our 105th Anniversary Gala!

Thanks to you and your hard work, it was a successful night of celebrating BHS and the animals that we serve. Without the help of each staff member, volunteer, intern, donor, sponsor and guest, we wouldn’t have had such a lively evening of “Grr-lesque, Purr-lesque.”

We had 140 donors who generously gave items for 14492591_10154288685595100_6659311711965809362_n our silent and live auctions at the gala. We auctioned off some exciting items and packages, including trips to New York and Hawaii, a private dinner with the Sushi Brothers, and unique hand-crafted woodwork. There were a few tantalizing performances by the Malteazers, and impactful short films about our current programs by the talented Tanis Cassidy. We are so very thankful for everyone who made it possible!

Three BHS dogs also made an appearance! Having dogs there made it really special, letting our guests know who they are directly helping with their donations. Overall it was a joyous night of celebrating Butte Humane Society’s 105 years of working diligently to help save lives, find homes, and inspire compassion!

From everyone here at Butte Humane Society, you are the reason we can do what we do – thank you!

Volunteer Spotlight: Jeanine S.

jeanine Jeanine has been with Butte Humane Society for three years and two months! She is extremely active on and off campus and always puts the animals first. In her time here, Jeanine has cleared Level 3 Dogs, D.O.G., Special Events, and Adoption Counseling, and enthusiastically participates in BHS’s new offerings such as Play Groups and Canines and Coffee.

Jeanine is a star and she alone collected nearly half of the auction items for Gala. That helped bring in huge funds for BHS!

You rock Jeanine, and this is what earns you Volunteer of the Month!

Disaster Preparedness with Pets

Don’t get separated from your pets in the event of an emergency!

dogfirstaid It’s no secret that Butte County is prone to wildfires. Every year homes are lost and even more families are evacuated. Emotions escalate, you can’t think straight, you’re not sure what to grab.

You always hear about the importance of having an evacuation plan, but you always put it off. Well now is the time to set it in place. Whatever you do, don’t forget to include your pets in the plan.

Have a travel crate for each of your animals, know where they are, and make sure they are accessible. Do you have livestock or horses? You’ll need a trailer and a place to shelter them for awhile. And of course you’re going to want to have a disaster kit ready to go.

Here is a list of basic items to include in your pets’ disaster kits:

Food & Water: Enough to last your pet at least a week. Travel size feeding dishes.
Proof of ownership: Include pictures and documents/records in case you are separated. This you may want to keep in your fire safe.
Vaccines and meds: Proof of vaccinations and supply of meds and/or copy of prescription if you need to board your pet.
First aid kit: Gauze, disinfecting wipes, tweezers, ice packs, and a pet first-aid book.
Leash/crates: Big enough for them to turn around, sit down, and stand up in case they need to be enclosed for long hours. Extra blankets and wipes for cleanup.
Comforting toys or objects: Having familiar objects around is a good way to keep your pet calm during a stressful time.
Treats: Your pet feels stress too so some of his or her favorite treats may help get their mind off of the stress of the situation.

If you see a fire near your home, don’t wait until an officer in uniform comes knocking on your door, telling you to leave immediately. Grab your ready-made checklist of items for both you and your pets, and get everything ready to grab at the first sign of danger.

Train a Replacement Behavior to Get Rid of Annoying Behaviors

The trick with annoying behaviors is to train and reward an opposite or competing behavior. Whatever bothersome behavior the dog is engaging in, think of something that would preclude it, and train that behavior consistently.

Patience and consistency are always key in behavioral training. It can take a while for the dog to give up strategies that have worked for him consistently, but if he is no longer rewarded for them and is instead consistently reinforced for an alternative behavior, he will soon choose that new response every time.

Here’s some additional quick tips for training alternate behaviors:

To replace door dashing, train to sit or down before opening the door.
To replace eating trash off the ground, train to carry a toy or keep eye contact with you.
To replace barking at the doorbell, train to get a toy.
To replace digging up the roses, train to fetch or hide-and-seek with dog toys.
To replace pawing at you, train to put pawing on a cue – so he uses his paw for a “high five” or “wave” when asked.

Sweet Success: Coco!

Coco is such a happy and loving little addition to our family. She continues to bring us much joy. She walks with us and our other two dogs daily along Butte Creek. She is such a playful and happy blessing.

She begins each day out in the back yard with a stroll around the pool with her brothers Max and Bear, just to be sure it is safe for us to get in the water. Once the three of them have checked the pool, backyard, and the 7th green at Butte Creek Country Club for intruders or dangers it is time to head out for their daily walk.

We walk them off leash on the levee between Butte Creek and an almond orchard. Coco takes her time and smells everything. She believes in taking things slow as she explores the terrain. She is very much a lap dog and will not take no for an answer regarding snuggling on your lap anytime you sit down.

She gets along very well with all our animals. Everyone who meets her comments on what a loving, happy, sweet and precious girl she is. We feel so fortunate to have her as part of our family. You call her and she gleefully comes running. She loves to lay on an ottoman we have on the covered back porch and watch the hummingbirds. Coco loves to sleep under the covers on inside a pillow case. She is also a chow hound! She eats faster than the other dogs and loves treats. Coco is much loved and an integral part of our family of three dogs, two cats and two humans!
