Being a volunteer, I remember when Tito was still in a kennel, and then became free-roaming in cattery 2. I had been wanting a kitty for some time, and the day we decided it was time to bring a kid with whiskers home, my partner and I visited BHS. We found Tito where he was lounging atop of a cat tree in cattery 2, and he let out a long, paw-flexing stretch and let me touch his belly. Yet each individual kitty was so sweet, so I got on the floor and played with all of them for awhile. I loved Tito’s playfulness particularly; and it seemed like he’d be a perfect napping buddy that still also had plenty of energy, which is exactly what we were hoping for. My partner also fell in love with Tito’s unique, almost dog-like personality, so I came back the next day to make things official! The adoption process was a breeze thanks to Shelby, she was very helpful.
Janie has been volunteering at Butte Humane Society in the catteries since May of this year. Although she has only been with us for five months she is almost at 100 hours and has already been running Cat Shadow Shifts as well as helping out at our Mobile Adoption events! Originally from New Jersey, Janie moved to Chico in 2002 and continued her career as a nurse at Enloe. Although she claims no pizza, soft pretzels, or cheesesteak sandwiches here can compare to the East Coast’s, she did admit Celestino’s downtown is very close in quality.
Janie retired after working as a nurse for 40 years early this year and decided to start volunteering at BHS in the catteries. More recently, she has started acting as a mentor/leader for cat shadow shifts. Adult cats are often passed over in shelters for kittens, so Janie tries to really talk with potential adopters about what they are looking for in a cat to steer them toward adopting older cats. They deserve love too!
Janie recently just adopted one of BHS’s cats, Theodore, who has been settling into his new life with two feline sisters and a canine brother. The most rewarding part of volunteering, for her, is making connections with the cats, especially the shy cats who need a little extra love to come out of their shells. Her grandson, Elyjah, is a current Junior Volunteer at BHS. Janie brought him into the catteries over the summer to see if he would be interested in volunteering. Elyjah was immediately hooked and has been volunteering with Janie as well. Being able to have her grandson volunteer with her has been a great bonding experience between the two.
Janie K. loves to be able to help the staff out and help find furrever homes for each cat.

What a treat this puppy has been as an addition to our family. Ginger (previously named Faith) has been warmly welcomed into our home and our lifestyle. We are avid campers during the Spring – Fall. Now that Ginger has had all of her shots, and is registered with the City of Sacramento she has gained free reign of the wilderness with us. In fact, she was just practicing her kayaking and swimming skills up in Plumas National Forest at Little Grass Valley Reservoir. She has also already visited the Russian River and has a trip scheduled for Scott’s Flat Reservoir.
While home during the day Ginger has been lucky enough to be home with her new Daddy. Rich has been home for a couple months and that has made being available for her during the day really easy. She is beginning to spend a few hours home alone at a time throughout the week as she gets ready to have at least half a day at home alone pretty soon. She also enjoys car rides, trip to the local Brewery (Bike Dog), and walking the neighborhood with us. Ginger is such a good listener she makes it easy for us to introduce new social experiences to her.
We are so happy with how warm and lovey Ginger is too. She gets plenty of snuggles and all the attention she could ask for. Ginger is such a kind puppy. We really are lucky to have found her. Thank you Butte Humane Society, for pairing us with our sweet puppy. We love her so much.
