Success Story: Paige and Dash

Josh, their new owner says, “Paige and Dash are settling in and becoming more comfortable in their new home everyday! I was so happy the first time I saw them really play…It seemed to click for Paige that she could run around however she likes and get Dash to play chase, who was so happy too! Paige has also started playing fetch with me, it just took a little while to figure out the bring-it-back part; Dash isn’t interested in that part. He’s happy to get the ball, but then wander off with it, so I’m still trying to figure out what games he likes.

We are proud to see both Paige and Dash go to their new forever home, and would like to thank their new adopters! Thanks for giving these two underdogs a success story of their own!

Clinic Corner: August is Immunization Awareness Month!

We want to make sure your pet is protected, and make sure you as their pet-parent, are educated on which vaccines your pet needs based on their age and lifestyle! In this article we will touch on core vaccines and lifestyle vaccines- each play a vital role in your pets overall health!

First, let’s touch on core vaccines. Think of these as the vaccines every pet needs regardless of their extracurricular activities.

For dogs, the core vaccines are rabies and DHLPP. You may have heard of DHLPP referred to as a “5 in 1”, “distemper/parvo vaccine” or “combo” vaccine. It protects your dogs from several dangerous illnesses: Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parvovirus, and Parainfluenza. These vaccines need to be started in a series when your puppy is 6-8 weeks old (rabies is one vaccine at 12 weeks or older) and continued until the 16-20 week mark. These vaccines need to then be administered annually/every three years for the life of your dog to keep them protected.

Core vaccines for cats are rabies and FVRCP, yes, even if they don’t go outside. Like dogs, the FVRCP is a combination vaccine that protects against the most common upper respiratory illness that can be deadly to cats. It protects your cat against Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus and Panleukopenia. Also like dogs, these vaccines need to be started in a series when your kitten is 6-8 weeks old (rabies is one vaccine at 12 weeks or older) and continued until the 16-20 week mark. These vaccines need to then be administered annually/every three years for the life of your dog to keep them protected.

There are also lifestyle vaccines for dogs and cats, meaning they are vaccines recommended if your pet participates in specific activities and would be at risk for things that wouldn’t be covered by the core vaccines.

For dogs, these are the bordetella vaccine and the canine influenza vaccine: recommended if your dog goes to the groomer, boarding facilities, dog parks, or places that are heavily dog populated; and the lyme vaccine, and the rattlesnake vaccine:recommended if your pet regularly accompanies you on hikes or other outdoor excursions where they would be exposed to ticks or rattlesnakes.

The feline lifestyle vaccine is FELV, which protects against Feline Leukemia, and is recommended if your cat spends time outside, even if it’s just on your patio or in your own yard.

Volunteer Spotlight: Jess & Chloe A.

There is so much to be said about the dynamic mom and daughter duo Jess and Chloe A! They first began volunteering with BHS in 2017. Their love of cats brought them to begin their volunteer journey at Cat Adoptions. Seeing the need we had for help within our Warehouse assisting with dishes and laundry, they began volunteering there as well. Since then, Jess has become one of our Mentors at Cats, and also helps lead Shadow Shifts within that department.

Chloe’s long term goal is to become a veterinarian. Jess saw that passion and, as her mother, wanted to encourage that passion. She wanted to help her daughters learn how rewarding volunteering can be. Chloe has taken that lesson, and quickly became our most active and reliable Junior Volunteer.

Their favorite part of volunteering is spending time with the cats. They enjoy getting to know each one’s unique personality and help support them through their adoption journey. They know the best part is seeing a once shy, aggressive cat blossom and find their forever home. Due to the time and patience spent with each cat, Jess and Chloe are an extremely valued part of our volunteer team. They can be relied upon to truly get to know and understand each cat’s needs,and work with them individually to allow them to become the best version of themselves within the shelter. This makes their transition into the forever home as smooth as possible.

When they aren’t volunteering at BHS, they enjoy spending time with their two cats Tigerlily, a spunky 8 year old Torbie, and Amber, a shy Tortoiseshell. They also have 3 chickens and two ducks that are full of personality!

For fun Chloe enjoys running long distance, which she excels at, cooking for the family, and learning. Jess enjoys long phone calls, hiking, and reading as well. As a family, they enjoy camping adventures and playing board games.

Jess and Chloe have truly helped our Cat Adoption Center become better, and they are always happy to help where needed. It is an honor to have them as a part of our volunteer team.

We Need Dog Fosters!

Your contribution as a foster will provide us with a better understanding and perspective on what the ideal home for the pet may look like, plus BHS will provide you with all things necessary to care for your foster animal. We do our best to match you with a foster pet that meets your lifestyle and offer behavioral support during the fostering process.

We’ve widened our foster perimeter to include foster to adopt for pets with special circumstances such as length of stay or bonded pairs. Max- Greetings Foster Parents!

BHS is looking for a Foster Parent for Max. Max is a pint sized American Pitbull Terrier mix who came to the shelter as a surrender. He has been struggling with the shelter environment and needs a quiet home so he can take a break from the hustle and bustle of the shelter site. Max is actually quite affectionate! He loves a soft blanket to curl up on and enjoys being around people. Other dogs make Max nervous so we’d love to find a place without other animals. Max enjoys toys, playing fetch and walks in calm environments. Max has been at the shelter for 50 days and he really could use a break while we continue the search for his new home. Please consider fostering Max!

Dogs: Toy Recommendations

It’s a part of the package deal for most dog owners. Ideally you get a dog and the toys start rolling in. But then what? Dogs differ on their value of toys and I hope this article will shed some light on helpful tips and recommendations for how to make toys hold their value for your furry companions.

Let’s talk about the beloved tennis ball! Classic, am I right? Well you may be surprised to find out that tennis balls can actually do more harm than good. If overused or left unattended tennis balls can and will wear down your dogs dental over time. Our Veterinarian doesn’t recommend them, instead opt for a softer squishy ball and make sure to monitor your pup while this toy is being played with; because they’re also very easy for a dog to destroy them posing a choking hazard. Now what about the access to toys? Does your dog have free range to grab whatever toy at any time? Do you have a toy box for your dog’s toys? Maybe you’ve noticed that after you purchased a new toy it is exciting for a little while, but after a week or two later, your dog barely gives any attention to it.

Allowing for constant access to the toys will devalue them. I suggest taking back just a few of those toys, put them away for a couple of hours or maybe even a few days, then when you and your dog are ready to engage in some play, take out the hidden toy and watch your dog’s eyes light up like they’ve never seen it before. Then after play time is done, put it away again. Your dog will show more engagement with the toys and the hope is that they will find value in the old toy. Plus, maybe save a few bucks along the way!

Also, are you doubling down on the treats? Swap out a tasty treat routine for an opportunity to grab these toys and have a quick play session. Once the dog is finding value in their toy again they may prefer the play session instead of the quick snack routine.

Finally, be sure to inspect toys regularly, any moderate to severely damaged toys should be tossed out to avoid your dog swallowing a harmful piece. A blockage and exploratory emergency surgery runs not only a high risk and recovery time for your dog, but will also cost on average $800-$7000 without pet insurance. Always pick toys that are the appropriate size for your dog to avoid a choking hazard.
