Get To Know Our Process:
We understand that rehoming your pet is never an easy decision. Butte Humane Society is here to help you make the right choice for you and your pet, and to provide help within our capacity to do so. We strive to accept all adoptable pets while maintaining a high standard of care.
Butte Humane Society is able to provide rehoming services according to current resources available. It is advised that applications are submitted ASAP when you become aware of a change that may require rehoming. This service cannot currently be provided on a same-day-as-application basis, and in some cases animals may be required to wait an extended period of time until resources become available to Butte Humane Society to help with your animal.
If you have an adoptable pet that you wish to rehome, please follow these steps:
-
- Take a moment to make sure your decision to rehome is the right one.
- Fill out our rehoming application.
- Butte Humane Society staff will contact you within two to three business days.
- Please keep in mind we ask for a rehoming fee.
- Upon the approval of the application we will schedule an appointment for an intake appointment that includes a medical and behavioral assessment. Our Intake Coordinators will also take the opportunity to discuss your pet’s normal routine, known behaviors, and ideal home moving forward.
*Please plan to provide any and all current health and medical records for your pet.*
Surrendering a Dog?
Butte Humane Society requires an application to rehome prior to the owner’s surrender. Upon the approval of the application we will schedule an appointment for an intake appointment that includes a medical and behavioral assessment. Our Dog Intake Lead will also take the opportunity to discuss your dog’s normal routine, known behaviors, and ideal home moving forward.
Please plan to provide current health and medical records for your dog. We understand this is a difficult decision and hope your dog will meet our rehoming requirements. Butte Humane Society can only accommodate dogs based on space availability and other resources.

About Our Evaluation Process:
We evaluate every animal simply for safety reasons. Our behavior and medical staff evaluate every animal that comes through our doors. Sometimes the shelter environment is just too stressful. For dogs and cats that may not be a good fit for our program, we can offer resources on how to rehome them on your own. We want every pet to succeed and find their forever home!
It is possible that some animals might not meet our adoption program requirements, due to aggression, or have needs that are beyond what our current resources can provide for. We promise to always have the animals best interest at heart and provide alternative suggestions for pet owners.
