Community Partnership – Chico Pet Works

Butte Humane Society is excited to announce a new partnership with Chico Pet Works.  We are teaming up to benefit our shelter dogs and cats that need a little extra hair care.

Chico Pet Works offers many products and services, including professional dog grooming and self-service pet wash stations, and they have generously offered to provide Butte Humane Society with 50% off their pro-groom services and 10% off their self-service pet wash stations.  This can make a huge difference in how quickly some of our animals can find their forever homes – and we want Chico Pet Works to be acknowledged for putting the welfare of the animals ahead of their profits. 

Along with this new partnership, we plan to establish monthly mobile adoption events outside of Chico Pet Works to provide more exposure for our adoptable animals.  In the near future, we hope to provide each adopter with a take home bag with materials, coupons, and flyers that benefit both the adopter and the adoptee.

Volunteer Spotlight: Randy R.

Randy –There is so much to say and so little room to write! Randy started volunteering at BHS right after the Camp Fire consumed the town of Paradise. It was a critical time when Butte Humane needed a large number of volunteers, and many people were in need of replacement food and items for pets who had escaped the fires with them. Even though Randy had just lost his own home in this fire, he jumped into volunteering with both feet and gave it his all. Randy volunteered most of his free time at our Pet Food & Supply Pantry, where he helped folks who had lost their homes access the tools they needed to continue caring for their pets. He quickly became a team leader, and helped keep the Pet Food & Supply Pantry organized, clean, and easily accessible to those in great need.

As things have started to settle down at the Pet Food & Supply Pantry, Randy has also started volunteering in other areas at Butte Humane Society. He volunteers at dog adoptions, which gets our dogs out of the kennels and helps destress them with long walks around the area. 

Randy has been such a valued volunteer for special events. He assists at our biggest fundraiser of the year, The Anniversary Gala and helps us out with Bidwell Bark and many of our smaller fundraisers/community awareness projects.

Randy is an amazing example of true compassion, kindness and selflessness. He’s an outstanding volunteer, we couldn’t keep our doors open without people like Randy.

Clinic Corner: December 2019

As 2019 comes to a close, everyone at the Butte Humane Society Veterinary Clinic wants to thank you for allowing us to care for your furry family members this year! If you are coming for a visit in December- check out our giving tree! After a decade of servicing Chico and our surrounding communities, we are looking to upgrade and add to our current clinic equipment and we need your help! Donations to help us reach our goal are appreciated more than you know!

Sweet Success: Ben and Jerry

I adopted Ben and Jerry on Oct 7, 2017. These sweet soot-black brothers entered the Butte Humane cat shelter on August 16th of 2017. Upon arrival, both boys had several medical issues and spent a few weeks in the sick room until they were well enough to join the other cats. I was an adoption counselor at Butte Humane Society at the time and was watching them closely. Many people loved to interact with them and pet them, but showed no interest in adopting these lovely boys. I’m not sure if it was the stigma that many associate with black cats or something else, but soon they began entering their teenage stage and no longer had that cute kitten look many adopters want.

Adopting Ben and Jerry was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. These boys are very close with one another, and although they almost look completely identical, they have completely different personalities. Ben is a sensitive boy who follows me around the house and loves to cuddle with me at night. He also closely monitors my labrador Odin and grooms him from time to time. Jerry, on the other hand, thinks he is the king of the house! He will greet everyone that walks in, but will quickly become uninterested and move on to his own independent activities. Jerry’s purr sounds like thunder, and they are both sweet as can be.

I couldn’t imagine life without my furry family, and I feel so honored to have adopted from Butte Humane Society.

Sweet Success: Bo

Our new kitty is doing fantastic! He adjusted to his new home super fast and is fitting in as a wonderful addition to our family.

We did change the spelling of his name, so he’s Bo now. He doesn’t seem to mind. We felt it lends itself to more punny nicknames. El-Bo, little Bo peep, Bo-tie, and so on. Personality-wise, he’s very playful and rambunctious, but well behaved. He’s discovering the he can jump higher and farther as he’s growing, so we’re keeping an eye on items that we need to move further out of reach or put away. He doesn’t destroy anything though. He just wants to play with stuff.

We do have a small dog named Milkshake and they quickly took a liking to each other. They are the best of friends and really enjoy playing and snuggling. It’s really too cute. We do keep them separated when we’re not home, at least until he’s big enough to defend himself better if needed. There’s been no aggression from either one of them though, which is awesome.

We really haven’t had any challenges. He used his litter box immediately and he’s had a healthy appetite. He’s personable with my partner and me, and any guests we have over. He plays and cuddles with the best of them. He does have a desire to eat the dog’s food, so we have to put it out of his reach. He eats his own food just fine though too.
He’s also not quite learned what bed time is, so we’ve been putting him in the walk-in closet at night so he doesn’t attack our feet under the sheet. The closet is kind of his home base. Plenty of shelves for him to climb on. Soft piles of clothes and blankets to sleep. His litter box, food, and water also live in the closet so he always has access to those.
As far as the adoption process, you guys were fantastic. I’ve always loved butte humane, and will continue to support and recommend your organization forever. Thank you for all you do!
