Why did you get involved with volunteering at BHS?
I started volunteering at BHS last summer because I was hoping to gain more hands-on experience working with animals. Some friends of mine had told me about their volunteer experience at BHS and highly recommended it, so I decided to become involved. I am so happy I did!
What is your favorite part of volunteering at BHS?
I love walking the dogs at BHS and playing fetch with them in the play yards. It is very rewarding to see the dogs enjoy their time outside, and I also really enjoy feeling useful by helping out. I know BHS relies on volunteers and community support to keep things going so it feels very fulfilling knowing that I am able to contribute to that as well.
Is there anything you have learned at BHS that you have carried into your personal experiences or shared with others?
During my time here at BHS, I have learned more about dog behavior. Seeing the different ways dogs behave inside versus outside their kennels is very telling, and it shows me that all dogs are unique and should be given personalized attention and care. Just because they act out doesn’t mean they are bad dogs. All they need is some good love and care, basic training, a consistent outlet, and some proper socialization. In my personal life, I have been able to apply this observation and help other people see it too. It has made me more appreciative of the many trainers out there!
Do you have any animals of your own?
No, unfortunately I currently do not have any pets, but I hope to have a dog in the near future! Thankfully, in the meantime, I have lots of friends who have dogs and they often ask me to dogsit.
