Andrew is a super star volunteer! He has been helping BHS with a new volunteer program, “The Breakfast Club”, for the last 2 months to help prepare food for shelter animals in the early mornings. He also manages the Cat Adoption Callbacks to check-in with BHS cat adopters and ensure the adoption is going well. Andrew’s favorite part about volunteering is snuggling with the cats and seeing their personalities blossom over time. Fun fact: Andrew adopted both his cats, Sushi and Mikey, from BHS 4 years ago! Andrew has made such an amazing impact at BHS and we are so grateful for his hard and selfless work.
Why did you get involved with volunteering at BHS?
I recently adjusted my work schedule to make sure I was taking care of my mental health. Volunteering felt like a good use of my new-found time. I’ve always loved animals and, out in the world, I always find myself going out of my way to pet all the neighborhood cats I run across. It just made sense to get involved somewhere that puts such great effort into ensuring our furry friends find loving and caring homes.
What is your favorite part of volunteering at BHS?
Snuggling with the cats, of course! Haha! Moreover, it’s seeing the growth in their personalities – seeing how each time I visit, the staff and other volunteers have put such effort into helping the animals feel comfortable and come out of their shells. That’s the most special part for sure!
Is there anything you have learned at BHS that you have carried into your personal experience or shared with others?
Honestly, I haven’t been involved that long, but it’s just been really eye opening to see the level of work, dedication, and coordination that has to happen to make an operation serving so many animals run so smoothly. That’s my favorite thing to share with others when I talk about my time with BHS.
Do you have any animals of your own?
Yeah! We have one cat named “Kitten.” Her real name is “Sushi”, but we’ve just called her “Kitten” forever because she’s so small. We also have a dog named “Alice” who definitely keeps us busy. We recently lost our big boy kitty, “Mikey.” He’s the one with one eye in the photo. He was the biggest personality in the house and we miss him every day.
