What happens at an Intake appointment?
Each kitten is given a general exam which consists of checking their sex, temperature, weight, hydration level, ears/nose/teeth, and skin (fleas & ticks). They are scanned for ringworm, given Pyrantel (dewormer), an FVRCP vaccine, and Revolution (flea/tick prevention), and have their photo taken.
Two staff members handle the intake process: one for handling each kitten, and one to administer each process & record their welfare status. This time is also valuable for an initial temperament assessment! We learned that Dylan was skittish – he tried to escape at every opportunity. The rest of his siblings were pretty mellow during their appointment.
Once the exam is complete, the kittens are transferred to their new kennel/s to have some quiet time. Vet appointments can be stressful for any animal! We use low stress handling techniques and a special spritz called feliway to minimize stress upon intake.
